FAQs and Guidance
How should I decide whether to transfer during a bonus?
Start with your travel plans, not the percentage. In my view, a bonus is only worth considering if you can see a real flight or hotel you want in the near future, and the partner you are transferring to usually receives points instantly or very quickly. If there is no near-term use or the transfer is known to be slow, I prefer to keep points flexible even when the bonus looks attractive.
How do you look at the Bilt → Avios Rent Day bonus?
The Bilt Rent Day Avios bonus is extremely strong on paper, especially at higher status tiers where you can get up to 2 Avios per Bilt point. I would use it when I already have specific Avios redemptions in mind—like short-haul American or Alaska flights, Iberia business to Madrid, or Aer Lingus to Dublin—and I can see award space right now. I would not move all my Bilt points speculatively just because the bonus is large; Bilt points are still valuable as a flexible currency.
How would you use the Amex → Virgin Atlantic 40% bonus?
I like this bonus when there is a clear Virgin or partner redemption already picked out and I have confirmed that award space is available. Virgin points can be powerful for certain premium-cabin itineraries, but they can also come with higher surcharges. I compare the total cost, including fees, to what I could do with other Amex partners or even booking through the Amex Travel portal before transferring.
How do you compare the Chase → Virgin bonus to other Chase options?
Chase Ultimate Rewards also transfer to partners like United, Air Canada Aeroplan, Singapore KrisFlyer, and Hyatt, all of which I value highly. Because of that, I only send a large amount of UR to Virgin Atlantic when the specific redemption clearly beats what I can do with those other partners or through the Chase travel portal. If the traveler mostly wants Star Alliance flights or Hyatt stays, it often makes sense to keep UR points for those programs instead.
How do you approach the tiered Chase → Aeroplan bonus?
For Aeroplan, I first look at the trip: is there a Star Alliance itinerary I want to book, and does Aeroplan price it well compared to United or KrisFlyer? I then transfer what I need to book that trip and treat the tiered bonus as a nice extra. I do not increase my transfer amount solely to reach a higher percentage tier if I do not have a clear plan for those extra points.
Are the Rove → Finnair and Wyndham → KrisFlyer bonuses worth using?
They can be, but they are more niche. I see the Rove → Finnair bonus as useful if you are already earning Rove Miles and want to build a Finnair Avios balance for specific flights. The Wyndham → KrisFlyer bonus can be good for topping off a KrisFlyer account to finish an award booking. I generally would not move flexible bank points into Wyndham and then on to KrisFlyer just to chase a 20% bonus because that typically sacrifices too much value along the way.
What is your one-sentence rule for beginners about transfer bonuses?
Use tools like PointsYeah and point.me to see which programs give you the best value and which bonuses are live, then only transfer points when you already know which flight or hotel you are going to book with those miles.
What mistakes should I avoid with transfer bonuses?
Common mistakes include transferring to a partner that posts slowly when award space is limited, sending a very large first transfer to a partner you have never used before, and splitting or repeating identical transfer amounts in a way that may trigger delays. I prefer to test new pipelines with smaller transfers, keep most transfers to reasonable chunks (for example around 50,000 points or less), and vary amounts if I need to send multiple transfers in one day.
